Inbound freight is unloaded, sorted and reloaded onto outbound trailers the same day, often within hours. Nothing is put away. It suits consolidating several inbound shipments into one outbound load, breaking a full trailer down into regional deliveries, or transferring between equipment types near the border. Because the freight never enters storage, both handling cost and dwell time come out of the lane.

Cross docking moves freight from an inbound trailer to an outbound one without it going into storage, usually inside a day. Warehousing is where freight sits. If your freight is waiting on a schedule rather than on space, cross docking is the cheaper answer.
When you are consolidating several inbound shipments into one outbound truckload, breaking a truckload down for regional delivery, or transferring between carriers at a border or rail terminal. It removes a put-away and a pick that you would otherwise pay for.
