What LTL actually means
Your pallets share a trailer with freight from other shippers and move across a carrier's line-haul network. You pay for the space you use rather than the whole trailer, which is the economical choice for smaller shipments. The trade-off is handling: LTL freight is transferred at terminals along the way, so packaging and accurate freight class matter more than they do on truckload.

LTL shares a trailer with other shippers and moves through carrier terminals. Truckload is your freight alone, direct from pickup to delivery. LTL costs less for smaller shipments and takes longer, with more handling along the way.
Freight class is a standardized rating based on density, stowability, handling and liability. Carriers reweigh and re-measure shipments, and an inaccurate class or dimension on the bill of lading is the most common reason an LTL invoice comes back higher than the quote.
Palletized and shrink-wrapped, with nothing overhanging the pallet edges and the heaviest cartons on the bottom. LTL freight is handled several times between pickup and delivery, and packaging does more than the carrier does to decide whether it arrives intact.
If either end has no loading dock and no forklift, yes. Say so at quote time. A liftgate discovered at the door is an accessorial charge at best, and a rescheduled delivery at worst.
